Book Club – Patti Smith’s Just Kids is one stylish read
Just Kids, Patti Smith’s memoir about her relationship with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe is one hell of a style trip. Charting her pre-fame days in New York, you get a glimpse of life as a struggling artist (both hers and Mapplethorpe’s) as well as the inside track on what it was like to live in that most hallowed of hipster digs, The Chelsea Hotel. With seminal music, art, fashion and poetry being made left right and centre, sexual experimentation and the likes of Janis Joplin and Allen Ginsberg for decoration, its pages are literally glued together with cool.
Here’s to Patti, an extraordinary talent whose style, quite simply, rocks.
